Simple Past Tense & Past Progressive

April 8, 2013

Simple Past Tense

The simple past tense is used to talk about actions that happened at a specific time in the
past. You state when it happened using a time adverb.

You form the simple past of a verb by adding -ed onto the end of a regular verb but,
irregular verb forms have to be learned.

For example:

“Last year I took my exams.”

“I got married in 1992.”

It can be used to describe events that happened over a period of time in the past but not
now.

For example:

“I lived in South Africa for two years.”

The simple past tense is also used to talk about habitual or repeated actions that took
place in the past.

Past Progressive

The past progressive tense is difficult for many non-native speakers to master because many
languages don’t have an equivalent.

The past progressive describes an action that was in progress at a specific time in the
past. It can be used:

To describe an action that started in the past and was interrupted by another action:

He was writing an e-mail when the phone rang.
When the phone rang, he was writing an e-mail.
While he was writing an e-mail, the phone rang

Rikku

Desember 7, 2012

Ff10-rikku.jpg

I wanna go home! I hate lightning! I hate thunder!
—Rikku

Rikku is a lively and kind-hearted Al Bhed girl who is a playable character in both Final Fantasy X, and its direct sequel, Final Fantasy X-2.

Rikku’s father is Cid, the leader of the Al Bhed faction, and she has an older brother, aptly named Brother. Her mother died before the events of Final Fantasy X, having been killed by a faulty machina. Cid’s sister, Rikku’s aunt, married High Summoner BraskaYuna‘s father, making Rikku and Brother Yuna’s biological cousins.

In Final Fantasy X, Rikku is Tidus‘s first friend in Spira, and returns later in the story, becoming one of Yuna’s guardians. Strong-willed, Rikku makes numerous attempts to disrupt Yuna’s pilgrimage; knowing what Yuna’s fate would be at the end. She eventually joins the pilgrimage in an effort to ensure it wouldn’t happen. In Final Fantasy X-2, Rikku accompanies Yuna on her personal quest to reunite with Tidus.

Appearance and Personality

Rikku, at your service!
—Rikku
Rikku Menu.jpg

In her debut appearance in Final Fantasy X, Rikku is a young girl of only fifteen, with medium-length blonde hair in a ponytail and braided pigtails with orange feathers attached to them, and the Al Bhed trademark green eyes with swirled pupils. When she is first seen aboard the salvage ship, Rikku is wearing a full Al Bhed combat diving suit with reinforced materials that conceal her identity. Later in the game, she joins Yuna’s pilgrimage and sheds the suit, revealing a pair of flaired green short-shorts with an orange belt, loosely held around her waist, and an orange sleeveless tank-top with side straps and two long blue ribbons hanging from the back.

She wears a pair of goggles around her neck, a pair of boots, a gauntlet and arm guard for her right arm and a large protective forearm mit for her left. Around her right thigh, she keeps a pouch, in which she keeps her alchemy materials and equipment. Rikku’s nails are also painted bright yellow. Despite carrying goggles around her neck and wearing them while salvaging and piloting machina, Rikku never wears her goggles again after she takes them off on the Moonflow.

In Final Fantasy X, due to their familial bond as cousins, Rikku is completely loyal to Yuna – whom she affectionately calls “Yunie” – and the most vocal opponent against the ongoing pilgrimage that will eventually claim Yuna’s life. Over the course of the game, she also forms a close bond with Tidus and looks up to him as a brother (and treats him rather better than her own), perhaps because of their similar personalities and devotion to Yuna; their friendship is so close that Tidus is the first one of Yuna’s guardians to whom Rikku reveals she and Yuna are biologically related. She also turns to him for comfort, as seen in the Thunder Plains, when she collapses on the ground with fright, crawls towards him like a skiddish insect and grabs his leg.

Rikku is kind-hearted, spirited, happy-go-lucky, and energetic, which sometimes clashes with the more stoic group members. She looks up to Lulu as something of a role model, being impressed with her calm level-headed nature. Child-like and playful in many ways, Rikku tries to maintain a positive outlook and often refers to gloomy or annoying people as “big meanies”. Her cheerful outlook often makes a stark contrast, however, when she is sad or upset, and despite her outwardly happy exterior, she seems to carry some insecurities, particularly when it comes to her own future and what she wants to be. When voicing these worries to Yuna, she is reassured that her own adventure would arrive one day.

Rikku is also known to be highly intelligent, being bilingual and skilled in chemistry. She also suffers from astraphobia, the fear of lightning, after a mishap involving Brother and a stray Thunder spell in her youth. She starts to deal with this fear in Final Fantasy X, and has overcome it by Final Fantasy X-2, by camping out in the Thunder Plains for a week. Rikku also reveals a fear of snakes in Final Fantasy X-2, sometimes shouting “Snake! Snake! Snaaake!” when entering battle against a snake-like enemy such as a Recoil.

Final Fantasy X-2 Dresspheres and default appearanceEdit

Youth wins again!
—Rikku
Rikku.jpg

In the two years between Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2, Rikku’s hair has grown much longer; she wears it loose and braided, tied atop her head, adorned with colorful beads, and held by a blue bandana. Rikku remains the ever upbeat and somewhat reckless individual, occasionally causing trouble for her friends. Remaining loyal to her cousin Yuna, Rikku continues to care about her welfare while encouraging her to have more fun in life.

In Final Fantasy X-2, Rikku has a separate appearance for each of the 13dresspheres used in combat, with details that distinguish her in each dressphere from Paine and Yuna. Rikku’s default look is the Thief dressphere; she wears a yellow string bikini and an olive green mini-skirt, carrying two pouches at her waist and ruffle sleeves over each arm as arm guards. A long yellow and red scarf hangs loosely around her. Wearing the Thief dressphere in combat, she wields two red dagger-like blades designed for motive attacks.

In other dresspheres, she can be seen wielding Yuna’s Tiny Bee guns and summoning staves El Dorado and Spiked Rod as well as Tidus’s Crystal Sword,Auron‘s Katana blade and his Masamune katana. Her deck theme for the Lady Luck dressphere is clubs, and herMascot dressphere is a Cait Sith.

Tidus

Desember 7, 2012

Tidus artwork.jpg

Listen to my story. This… may be our last chance.
—Tidus

Tidus is the main protagonist of Final Fantasy X, a rising starblitzball player from Zanarkand. After the gargantuan monster known as Sin attacks his hometown, Tidus is transported to the world of Spira. Lost, confused, and seemingly out of place, Tidus meets a newly-fledged summonerYuna, and herguardians. Yuna is to set out on a pilgrimage in an attempt to put an end to Sin, and by joining Yuna on her pilgrimage, Tidus hopes he will find his way home.

Appearance and Personality

This is our story! Now let’s see this thing through together!
—Tidus to Yuna
Tidus's portrait.

Tidus is a youthful teen with an upbeat and carefree attitude, and at first appears rather childish. He turns more serious when things get hectic, and despite his carefree ways, Tidus conceals a troubled past and a more mature and caring person. For his cheerful personality, Tidus is quite sensitive, thinking things through, and even when giving an emotional response to most of his arguments, he tends to give a rational idea, just as he explains to Yuna about his ideas about the Yevon faith, and even when the heroes face the truth about the Final Aeon, Tidus is capable of giving the party a reasonable doubt concerning their fate.

Having been picked on throughout his childhood by his blitzball-playing father, it motivated Tidus to become a star blitzball player himself. To Tidus’s dismay, he still has a resemblance to his father, who tended to deny his position, take things easy, and never worry about the present situation, leaving things for the tomorrow, a trait Tidus despised about him. This is pointed out by Auron several times throughout the game, saying that Tidus is “the one running away”. A lot of Tidus’s personality is shaped by the comments he used to receive from his father, and how he grew up to resent him. However, despite having been verbally offensive, at heart, Jecht was proud of his son and his resolve. As the story develops, Tidus must confront his childhood and his relationship with his father.

Tidus CG model.

Throughout the game, Tidus eventually matures, changing from a somewhat self-centered and outspoken athlete, to a selfless hero. This theme is also hinted in the flashbacks of when Jecht helped defeat Sin in his own adventure, as well as in a conversation between Yuna and Tidus, where Yuna states that defeating Sin and bringing happiness to Spira makes any price worthwhile and at the game’s conclusion, Tidus has come around to her way of thinking.

Since he is never directly referred to by name in any audible dialogue, the pronunciation of his name among fans is sometimes unclear, although the expected Japanese pronunciation should be Tee-das/Tee-dusu. This was confirmed in dialogue fromKingdom Hearts, which features him in an unusual cameo, and was also confirmed in an interview with James Arnold Taylor, who did Tidus’s English voice.

In Kingdom Hearts II, although he doesn’t appear, Selphie mentions him, pronouncing his name as Tie-dus, confusing the issue further. Though ostensibly unrelated to either, the pronunciation of his name among fans may also be affected by its resemblance to the English word tide and the given name Titus. However, in the English release of Dissidia Final Fantasy, all characters in-game refer to him as Tee-dus.

Notably, since Tidus could not be referred to by name in spoken dialogue, Final Fantasy X succeeded in, with every instance of referring to the main protagonist, doing so entirely using impersonal pronouns (you, him, new guy, brudda).

Auron

Desember 7, 2012

Auron Art.png

This is it. This is your story. It all begins here.
— Auron

Auron is a playable character in Final Fantasy X. He is a former warrior monk of Yevonguardian of High SummonerBraska, and is Tidus‘s caretaker. He is, in many ways, the unofficial leader of the main party of the game, as party members will often come to him for advice or ask for his permission.

Auron’s complex and mysterious past, revealed in pieces during the game, directly ties into the stories of Braska and Tidus’s father Jecht, and helps set the stage for the game’s events. In the English localization of Final Fantasy X, Auron ispronounced [ˈɔː.ɹən] (or-run).

Appearance and Personality

Auron wears a deep red haori with blue lining, kept closed with a thick, black and blue strap with two brown belts wrapped around it. Auron tucks his left arm into the front of his haori, making it look as though his arm is in a sling. He removes his left arm from his haori when fighting, but his right arm remains in its sleeve. This aspect (along with the jug on his side) is a tradition of sorts among rōnin, and is likely meant to be an homage to this traditional figure: a rōnin is a samurai who refused to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) after his lord’s death; this may be a reference to Braska’s death.

Auron wears a brown shoulder pad on his left shoulder that is intricately decorated with tan, green and blue patterns, with a beaded ornament dangling from it. He wears black pants and shoes, the latter of which have brown straps and triangular metal plating. Auron wears a black shirt with a gray collar with intersecting brown straps that is high enough to cover his mouth. His long hair is dark black with gray streaks and is held back by a gold ribbon, and he seems to have some stubble on his chin.

There is a large scar over the right half of Auron’s face and over his eye, which is constantly shut as a result. His left eye is amber colored. On his right hip, Auron carries a jug with the word “Nog” written on it (in Spiran script), a term used to describe a number of beverages, including rum. The drink is featured in two of his Overdrives: when executing Banishing Blade, Auron takes a drink and spits it on the blade, and when using Tornado, Auron hurls the jug into the cyclone to ignite it. The former is likely meant as an homage to Japanese samurai, who would sometimes spit sake on their swords in order to “feed the spirit of the blade”.

Auron is the strong silent type. He speaks only if necessary, but when he does, he often says something important. He appears as a strict, no-nonsense warrior with a dry wit. As a guardian, Auron devotes his life to protecting those in need, putting the matters of others before his own, and is unconcerned with his own well-being. Auron is idolized across Spira by aspiring guardians.

However, beneath the silence, Auron is still outraged and disgusted over the events of ten years ago during hispilgrimage with Braska, and appears to still mourn the loss of his friends. Auron regards himself as a failure for letting the cycle continue. Auron has little to no respect for Yevon, showing no regard for them, likely due to his knowledge of their inner workings and corruption. Kazushige Nojima has compared Auron to Vincent Valentine ofFinal Fantasy VII, stating that though the two are meant to be silent characters, they tend to speak a lot and often have something important to say.

Squall Leonhart

Desember 7, 2012

Ff8-squall2.jpg

Right and wrong are not what separate us and our enemies. It’s our different standpoints, our perspectives that separate us.
—Squall Leonhart

Squall Leonhart is the primary protagonist of Final Fantasy VIII. A young and aloof SeeD mercenary for much of the game, others view Squall as cold and focused until he begins to question the way he has chosen to live his life. Squall’s weapon, the gunblade, is one of the most iconic weapons of the Final Fantasy series. Squall is later given the title Commander (委員長, Iinchō?, lit. “Chairman”).

Appearance and Personality

Uses a sword called a gunblade. Special skill is Renzokuken, using the gunblade. Silent, and a bit cold.
Scan description
Squall's portrait.

Teenager with unruly brown hair and light blue eyes, Squall is most often seen wearing a black leather bomber jacket with a fur trim collar and a v-neck white shirt, black pants with three interconnecting belts, and black boots and gloves. He has a silver stud in his left ear, and wears a silver chain necklace with a Griever pendant and a matching ring. The only times he isn’t wearing this particular outfit is when he’s wearing his SeeD uniform or SeeD cadet uniform, which he only does if he is required to, and in flashbacks to his childhood days, in which he wears an orange shirt with several horizontal stripes and dark pants. Squall’s gunblade of choice is the Revolver, of which he owns a customized version with Griever engraved imprinted on both sides. In a duel with his rival, Seifer Almasy, both end up giving each other mirroring scars across the face.

In Dissidia Final Fantasy Squall looks much as he did in Final Fantasy VIII, but is given additional fur ruffles on his jeans, a sash partially covering his right leg, and a lion’s head belt buckle, as well as a new shirt with a plunging v-neck collar.

Even though in Squall’s eyes are light blue in Final Fantasy VIII and Dissidia Final Fantasy, in a few selected FMV’s in Final Fantasy VIII Squall’s eyes appear green, and both his Final Fantasy Mini Arts figure and Dragon Quest & Itadaki Street portable artwork have brown eyes.

Squall starts an introverted, brooding, cold and taciturn teenager who pushes away those who would otherwise be considered his friends. Though withdrawn, Squall does not shrink from what he considers his duty. As much as he resents assuming leadership, he is the first to ensure that what is necessary gets done. Squall’s clear mind and sense of responsibility lead others to trust and follow him. Even though everyone agrees on how difficult Squall can be, staff and students admire him, and he is eventually appointed Commander ofBalamb Garden, much to his dismay. Squall becomes the “de facto” leader of the party, though at first he dislikes his comrades looking to him for orders and advice.

Squall’s hubris.

During the game, Squall narrates his thoughts and feelings in silent voice-overs, during which he reveals he acts the way he does for fear of getting close to people. Squall cannot remember his parents, and his sister was taken away when he was young, making him afraid of losing the feelings of comfort loved-ones provide. Squall does not believe in relying on others, as friends and family are inevitably lost and in the end he will be alone.

Squall comes to rethink his choices in life, falling in love with Rinoa Heartilly and accepting the support and friendship of his comrades, becoming more social. This more open version of Squall is more or less how he is characterized in theKingdom Hearts series. Dissidia Final Fantasy mirrors Squall’s evolution from a loner to the man he is in Final Fantasy VIII’s ending. Squall fights alone, but finds himself worrying about fellow heroes Bartz and Zidane, and accompanies them and helps them on their quests once he has completed his own.
